Emma receives her award from Prof. Steve Renshaw
Caroline (Caz) Butcher was a much beloved colleague who sadly passed away earlier this year. Caz helped Tim Chico set up his lab in the early days of what was then the MRC Centre for Developmental Genetics and provided friendship and support to innumerable colleagues. So when the Bateson Centre decided to have an award to celebrate some of the people who's work can sometimes go unnoticed behind the scenes it made sense to name the award after Caz.
I'm delighted to announce that Emma Armitage, our lab's research assistant, was chosen for the award yesterday at the Bateson Centre's away day. Emma gave a brilliant talk outlining some, but not all. the projects she has helped set up since beginning here in autumn 2014. One of the main reasons I nominated her for the award was her selfless attitude and willingness to establish techniques and projects and to then hand them over to other members of my lab. She is the glue that holds us together and has the patience of a saint with the rest of us! One of the reasons I think she was chosen, against 3 other equally outstanding nominees, was that she's fulfilled a similar role to Caz, helping a junior PI in establishing themselves in the centre. Well done and thank you, Emma!
Caz and her family set up a charitable fund to help families in Sheffield living with cancer. If you would like to find out more please visit the Caroline's gift website here.
